Multi-Color extrusion with GigaOm SpectrOm and similar concepts

i wanted to see if you can color a filament with RGB pigments rather than to mix 3 RGB filaments, and have found out about GigaOm's spectrom extruder that can change between various colors, it isn't very flexible but they still did manage some color prints. It seems that on one in the RepRap community has done some reviews of GigaOm's product, why? did it stay in prototype version?

How difficult is it to color a filament while it is extruding? here are some pics:
