stepper motor noise

My x and Y-axis steppers make a rattling noise before hitting the endstops when homing these axes.
They have done this since new,even with a different electronics setup (now ramps 1.4)
The z and extruder motors don't do this.
Can anyone tell me what causes this,and how to resolve this issue?
