what material for thick sheet parts?

I have downloaded the .DXF file for the thick sheet parts for my Mendel and I am about to send it to a laser cutting company. What material should they be making it out of? It is not specifically stated in the BOM. I was planning on specifying 1/4" plexiglass, would that work?

1/4" plexiglass would work.
They use 5/6 mm MDF.
Anything between 3 and 6 mm would work EXCEPT for the BED.
This should be very flat and not liable to warp with head (e.g. plywood is generally not good for the bed).
Otherwise feel free.
A mendel looks pretty cool with clear (or lightly tinted) plastic.

I would discourage "extruded" PMMA/plexi, because they are very brittle.

I will make mine out of PVC.

Laszlo

I used 3mm Dibond. Perfectly flat, easy to machine and relatively stiff for 3mm. It is HDPE laminated with aluminium. Probably not good for laser cutting though.

nophead,

what kind of Dibond are you using? I am currently in discussions with local suppliers, and apparently there are different kinds of DiBond.confused smiley Who knew?

Thankyou in advance.
