OT Some old iron for sale

Back in the days before CNC and even milling machines they had machines called scrapers. The little one in the picture here is for sale. My brother-in-law bough this thing maybe fifteen years ago and it appeared then to be in extremely fine shape. Now it has sat in his shop for all that time collecting dust and a little rust and he wants to get rid of it. Anyone interested let me know, I think you can get it cheap.

So what can a shaper do? Quite a lot actually, but slowly. It strokes a lathe type cutting tool back and forth, a clapper assembly allows it to cut on the forward stroke and slide over the surface on the return. An index mechanism moves the work table and vice a few thousands to one side every stroke. You can precisely surface a part automatically, but slowly. You can square up a block of metal to an exact dimension, slowly. You can cut keyways in shafts and gears, at a fairly good rate for this type of work. You can cut gear teeth with it. I know a company that used one surface the copper tips on their spot welding machines. Lathe tools are really cheap, mill cutters are quite expensive.

I once interviewed for a job at a company that built bending machines, They used turn of the last century shapers to cut the backing die to the shape of a part to be bent on their rotary benders. I commented about how mills had replaced that kind of machines. The guy said "Do you realize how cheap this is when you only want one die and you just grind a tool and let it work slowly with out anyone watching!" He was right of course.

I think there is a FS subforum where this would be more appropriate?

I think we need a "machine porn" folder for this type of thing.

... moved this thread to the 'Mechanics' section ...

In a big German CNC-forum we have some users (rising counts!) refurbishing and reactivating this shapers spinning smiley sticking its tongue out
