Opposing leadscrews

Hello everyone.

I was wondering if anyone had done this, or if there is an advantage to doing it.

I'm thinking of installing opposing acme leadsrews on a new machine - left hand thread on one side, right hand thread on the other.

Would this help eliminate z-wobble? Is there was some other technical reason this would be advantageous?

Just wondering if I should try it out or not bother if it's been covered and proven to be of little or no value.

Thanks,
Matt

Maybe I am wrong, but wouldn't this configuration tend to push the parts attached to the leadscrew into the direction of rotation?

uGen,

I think you are correct, which is why I'm thinking of trying it on a mendelmax-style Z-axis.

I liken the idea to having two motors on a boat running in parallel. The propellers on the boat are run opposing directions - one clockwise, the other counter-clockwise. This eliminates steering torque. Thinking that there is something that can be gained with this setup.

Well, I've ordered the parts. We'll see if there is anything to it.
