Double bed? Big hole on the side of the bed?

Hi guys,

Lots of questions get raised when you start building stuff!

so... about the bed...

1)why does the parent reprap in the following picture have a double decker bed?
look here: [www.reprap.org]

2)why do both beds (on the parent) have a hole on the side facing the camera?

[the hole is also marked out for cutting in the template, but I have no idea what it's for..]

3)what is the part I have attached a picture of (wtf-mate.jpg)?

is this part of mendel?

I had some more questions but I can't remember them now so i'll post back...

Thanks for your help!

p.s.
Just to clarify #2: i'm talking about a rectangular hole, 120mm by 70mm, with a 10mm fillet on the inside.

p.p.s
I attached the drawing of the hole i'm talking about, called wtf-bed.jpg

The second picture is the "doctor blade" swung out of the way and the hole in the bed is to clear it. See [blog.reprap.org]

I don't think it classes as a Mendel development, just a Darwin increment.

I think the floating bed is explained here: [blog.reprap.org]

Thanks again nophead!

this raises additional questions:

1)where can I get the files for the doctor blade setup?
2)is the double deck a must?

Thanks!

So the hole in the bed isn't always filled with the doctor blade? This might be useful as an attach point for "tool beds." For example, you could have a tray with a bunch of SMT components that attaches at that point.
