Anti-Anti-Backlash

I'm in the midst of building a Darwin and one of the things I noticed is that the Z axis was very stiff. After playing around with this and that, I finally removed the spring and upper nut from the anti-backlash mechanism. As far as I can tell, the weight of the bed is enough to prevent backlash. I'll probably put the upper nut back in, just to give it a bit more support.

My view on it is that I won't get backlash unless I lower the bed fast enough to counteract the weight of the bed. What do you think? Is there a compelling reason to keep the spring in?

I was talking to my CNC prof about this sort of thing with our schools reprap [oitreprap.googlepages.com] and he just said that on a non-router/mill system (ie in fdm systems) any pre-loading due to gravity is enough to compensate for backlash of the normal variety. I'm convinced so we didn't incorporate any anti-backlash into our z-axis scissor lift table.
