Free 3d scanner software?
April 16, 2014 03:39PM
Hi,

I built a 3d scanner with the makerscanner tutorial in mind...
(It's just a webcam plus line-laser plus currently manually driven turntable)
only to realize the Makerscanner project is outdated and doesn't work.

Is there any free/opensource 3d scanning software available?

I already tried/found:

  • Makerscanner, which is outdated and did not produce a correct ply file to import into meshlab
  • Makerware which does not run because of "Xlib: extension NV-GLX missing on display :0". I doubt it is going to work with my hardware anyway.
  • SplineScan which is dead. Did not try yet. Tried the successor instead:
  • pylatscan. Was able to "build", but don't know how to execute.
  • Beagle Scan which seems to be very narrow on the hardware supported.

Into which project should I invest more effort to make it work? Is there anything I missed?

I tried compiling FabScan - boy does it need a lot of supporting files and memory. Unfortunately I never managed to get it to recognise the installed PCL library. I hear there is a bootable DVD available, which I'll try when I get some more blanks.

I'm also looking for software for MAC.

Only thing I could find it Skanect.

Makerware doesn't seem to work with Kinect.

For me the only option is to go with a Kinect.
