Daniel Reetz's Book Scanner is pretty cool:

Is anyone making one, with a tablesaw, RepRap or whatever? Or trying to make their darwin, mendel, or tablesaw scan books somehow? I've created a stub page at RepBookScanner for reprap user/builders who want to hack on the idea and maybe print one:

I know that this has gone nearly 3 years without a comment but I am interested in this as well. If there are some of you that are interested, here is a proven system that is now open source. Google book scanning

Noisebridge considered building the Linear Book Scanner, but went with the DIY one -- the "Archivist", originally designed by Daniel Reetz, who has now 'retired' from production of the parts for public sale and handed it off to Tenrec Builders, who promise to evolve the design.
