which laser diode nm range is the best ?

i will build an laser engraver (~300mW), perhaps later an small cutter.

Can anyone tell me which laserdiode nM range is the best for engraving and/or cutting thin pieces?
maybe someone can recommend a diode to me?

... search for 445nm-diodes with powers between 1-2 Watts -- and learn about safety/hazards when applying such strong lasers!!
