Belt Driven CNC router for wood?

Based on parts I have on hand, I'd like to make a belt-driven cnc router/milling machine used primarily for wood, and once in a blue moon for aluminum (and would need a bit less accuracy). Would this work with reasonable accuracy (particularly on the wood)? I'm thinking hardwoods by the way, but clear (no knots).

That's what shapeoko does for years now. But I wouldn't waste my money on it and do it "right" from the start.
Chinese ballscrews and linear rails aren't expensive. The biggest hole in the pocket comes from the router.

If I was to belt drive I would definitely try and make a belt and pinion.

I agree with o_lampe though but I would fit a 2.2kw water cooled spindle (I am) instead of a router.

Why waste the stuff laying around for something halfassed? Maybe better to build a laser engraver with it?

He never said what he had to hand if he had a shapeoko kit to hand then yes he should build one.

If he has nema 17 and 8mm smooth rod then he's going to have problems.

In the UK shapeoko kits are not that cheap (I'm guessing all of the EU)

for such a small build area I can build something with ballscrews, linear rails all round & 4 nema 23's for a similar price obviously though if you build your own you would go bigger as well

I can almost put an 8*4 frame down with 25mm Hiwin's, 2005 ballscrews, supports, nema 23's, CNC shield, 36v power supply & z axis for the price of the large one.

You can get the mechanical kit from www.amberspyglass.co.uk in UK for ~300BP.
It isn't the same as the US shapeoko V3, more like an upgraded shapeoko V2.

That's a very good price for the frame

I would stick with Acme screws, Ball screws or Rack/Pinion
