External stepper driver for extruder?

Has anyone done a modification to the 5D motherboard code to output step and direction on the I2C pins instead of H-bridge signals so I could use an external step direction driver to run the extruder? I would like to use a more powerful motor than the H-bridges can handle to convert a generation 4 plastruder to stepper without adding gearing. I've got a Nema 23 stepper and driver that would do the job with no sweat.

I bought the plastruder on sale for my RepStrap mill but I need the 5D code for acceleration. I don't think the 5D code is compatible with the DC motor.

I could try to change the code myself but would prefer a working solution.

The I2C pins are step and direction, so you can connect them to another stepper driver without any firmware mods. Several people have done so already.
