Help with extruder stepper

I'm using wades geared extruder with a nema 17 stepper. The temperature sensor works along with the heated barrel. How would i test the stepper on the extruder to make sure it works.

All stepper motors are the same, so you can connect the extruder stepper motor to the stepper motor driver board of one of the axes.

It works fine when connected to one of the axis. When its connected to the extruder, i can turn the stepper manually which causes the power light to come on (like the other axis). When I press the extrude button, nothing happens. Will it only extrude when the heater is at a certain temp? Is there a way i can force the stepper when it's attached to the extruder?

I think I have it working. If i turn the extruder on the extruder motor truns for about 5 seconds and then holds with torque. Press it off does the same thing. Is this normal behavior?
