Gen 7 Connection Problem
June 30, 2013 02:16PM
Hi,

I just finished soldering the gen 7 v1.5 and uploaded repetier firmware but it doesnt seem to work... when i try to connecti in the
repetier host, the electronics keep repeating "?start" in the log and it wont accept any commands.

I think im doing something wrong so any help would be greatly appreciated.

The log:

19:42:47.488 : N3 M105 *4
19:42:47.488 : N4 M111 S6 *67
19:42:47.489 : N5 M80 *62
19:42:50.241 : N0 M110 *3
19:42:50.241 : N1 M115 *7
19:42:50.241 : N2 M111 S6 *69
19:42:50.250 : start
19:42:53.019 : ?start
19:42:55.821 : ?start
19:42:58.615 : ?start
19:43:01.409 : ?start
..
and it keeps going forever

Sounds like a reset issue. You may have a short somewhere on the board or power supply issues that are causing a brown out reset. Try running off USB power and see if that helps. But check the 5V circuit for shorts first. You should get in the 1000's of ohms or more when all is disconnected and you test resistance across 5V to ground.

Thanks for the fast reply smiling smiley

Checked the resistance... and it was abaut 500 at first but after i while it climbed to ove 2000ohms and maxed out my multimeter. Theres no difference between running from usb power or atx. Only thing i noticed is that if i change the power jumper to get power from the molexthe powerspply wont stay on, it pulses at the same rate the "?start" messsages appear. but only when the usb is disconnected. when i connect the usb.. everything stops. no communication no powersupply pulses and the powersupply stays off.

Edit: And after watching closely the bed and extruder leds also flash only dimmer.

Gen7 doesn't run off USB power.

Apparently your power supply requires a base load: [reprap.org]

Hi,

Base load doesnt seem to help. It only shortens the on-off interval. and when i keep adding loads eventually the psu shuts down completely.

When i physically connected the psu on wire to ground i managed to get the psu to stay on but the atmega still acts the same(keeps restarting over and over).
I have changed an uploaded different firmwares and repetier many times and different versions of it. they all act the same, except with teacup there is no communication(rather attempts) at all.

As bryanandaimee said, the atmega644 keeps restarting, but i can't figure out why...confused smiley

Edit: And by running off USB i meant that there was no PSU connected at all.

Edit2: threw the atmega on a breadboard and connected with repetier and got this:

... amd wait goes on until i give another command. This is probably normal?

I think this proves that the firmware is ok, so what could it be on the pcb that triggers the repeated resets?

So i took the board to an acetone bath and scrubbed it like it's done something nastytongue sticking out smiley.... aaand... the happiness of one beginner electronics (and reprap ) enthusiast has been unleashedsmiling bouncing smiley smiling smileysmiling smiley

But the shame...oh the shame... for bothering you guys with this....hopefully ill learn from this and clean next projects better and stop using cheap flux....

Thanks alot for you guys for your help. You saved one gen7 board from being killed...killed with fire.
