TOAD4 Open Hardware Project

Hi,

I though some of ReRappers and people who hang around here could be
interested in my TOAD4 (and EazyCNC) project.

This is a 4 axis PCB designed around four B6560 drivers and a PIC18F4550,
and supports USB and few optically isolated inputs/outputs plus an integral
power supply.

Could be used for RepRap ... just needs a bit of software.

You can read all about it here:

What is the maximum step rate with PIC18F ?

The timer interrupt runs at about 11 kHz so in theory about 5.5 kHz but I would expect that the jitter might be a problem, i would expect that we can get up to 0.5-2 kHz, but that remains to be tested with a specific motor and mechanism to push the limits.

If you want follow the project, please consider joining

so we can concentrate the questions and answers so that everyone can benefit.

An order of magnitude too slow for a RepRap then,

Well, I'm was talking about my firmware. The limit for the 6560 driver chips is 15 kHz and that is achievable if you do not need the kind of motion control that I use with my EazyCNC and G-code. I'm not 'pushing' this for RepRap, but just mentioning that as a possibility, it is a nice board, though I said it myself, and even if used just as a break out board for B6560AHQ, it could be useful.

... will receive soon some microstepping drivers with up to 100KHz (and have some others with up to 200kHz and 10MHz), so really interested in faster controllers winking smiley

ok, then this not for you, I guess you need something than can generate the pulses in hardware then (from CPU timer or FPGA).

I'm not up to speed with how RepRap works, just thought someone might be interested in what TOAD4 offers as I noticed
someone had raised a question about 6560.

... thought, it could be the other way round -> motivate developers of controller boards to design much faster controllers, as the new microstepping chips with 1/32 to 1/128 microstepping receive massive dropping in prices now winking smiley
