While searching for the best SD Card solution for Gen7, I came across Gen3, which has a nice and simple SD Card connector. Notable, there is no voltage level converter chip.

Does this actually work? Is somebody using this, at least basically?

Aren't hundreds if not thousands of people using it on Makerbots? I have a makerbot cupcake with gen3 electronics and the sd card works fine. I always kind of wondered why printing from SD was missing from modern electronics when gen3 had it so long ago.
