NEW Printer smiling smiley = More Parts
December 02, 2009 12:38PM
Our Robotics Club Cupcake CNC is due to arrive on Thursday. We hope to have it up and running by next week and we will start building a Mendel Reprap before we leave for Christmas break. I may run it quite a bit over the break. My son who is in the Club is chomping at the bit to build a Mendel. Our club will start making parts for others as soon as feasible.

Great! You should be able to recoup your investment for the cupcake quickly!

When you are ready to make a set of mendel parts count me in for one.

Edit:
My apologies for asking for parts....I just counted them. There's 98 parts in a mendel!!! And that's not including the extruder!

I should just buy a Makerbot and be done with it. sad smiley

Just found out about the whole fabbing thing and I'm extremely interested!
I'm located in Stillwater, let me know when you start making parts.

I have the Cupcake CNC almost done. I need to finish the plastruder and calibrate and then I can make a test print. Should start printing sometime this weekend.

No worries about the parts. I am going to work on some as soon as I can. you may want to check out my Cupcake CNC before you buy one. I have been thinking that many of the parts for a Mendel can be made in wood on my CNC mill. If you are interested in a HYBRID Mendel I think we can get it done faster. I'm going to build a hybrid

Hybrid mendel.....I have been following the wood mendel thread on the reprap forum. Here's one: [adamsblog-reprapbuildup.blogspot.com]

The corner blocks look fairly easy in wood/plywood. The big pieces that support the x/z seem to be not makable using my tools. [table saw, drill press, hand tools]

I'm on vacation the week of Christmas and plan to start on a wood mendel.

When you start making parts I hope you would be interested in producing a few parts that I will probably be unable to make.

Hope springs eternal.

Today is the last day of students and the Cupcake cnc is finished. I hope to calibrate and test this week. I want to make some room in the shop so I have decided to sell my CNC router (cutting area 25x36x5 ish) so if anyone is interested you can PM me. I am planning a smaller router build.

this is not the most recent picture of it, we have done some wire management and put drawers under it.

Troy,

That looks like it was built from the solsylva plans.

A few things come to mind:

*As a minor bit of terminology, mills are machines whose spindles only
move up and down. Machines with moving gantries are called CNC
routers. On the other hand, if it is cutting metal people sometimes
call it a gantry mill. (I'm being pedantic here because it helps to
be clear with terminology with google searches and with selling
things, especially for people just starting to learn about this
stuff.)

*You may want to try using the machine as a 3D printer with the
cupcake electronics or with your current electronics and the EMC3
repstrap setup:

[objects.reprap.org]

The nice thing about this is you'll have a much larger print area
than a cupcake, which _may_ allow you to set up long jobs like parts
of mendel and walk away. (Note: we don't have a formal mathematical
proof that the extruder won't burst into flame when left unattended,
so this might be best done in a shed or similar outbuilding with
little economic or sentimental value. Frankly you can probably get by with
making sure the room has a working smoke detector and staying within
earshot of it. )

*Also, if it does work well for that, please write up a paragraph
about it; I like to keep track of what makes good repstraps.

*Lastly, you may want to also post it for sale in
[dev.forums.reprap.org]

Cupcake CNC is built, the extruder is built, the firmware is finally loaded and....and.....nothing.....the machine jogs fine but the extruder does not respond. Arrrrrrg.......... taking a break for a day or two while we go back to school and then I will retackle the problem.

seems like I read a lot of people have that problem, but not with a makerbot. Usually points to min/max....hope it's not a short.

It lives. Made my first print tonight. I have a little Fine tuning and screw tightening to do tommorow and then I will start turning out parts for repraps. Woot

I think I have the print process tuned up and I am going to try tp print some Mendel parts today. Everyone cross you fingers, hopefully parts will be coming soon.

What does this mean?
Re: NEW Printer smiling smiley = More Parts
January 19, 2010 11:11PM
Parts are looking pretty good, but there is some warping. I ordered some PLA tonight and will resume printing in a couple of days. almost have my sons new repstrap built. getting ready to mount motors and wire it up. should be up by this weekend sometime. He is ready to have a machine at home so he does not have to hang out at the school.

Been thinking about a custom Ubuntu disk/usb distro that has all things makerbot/reprap preinstalled. Anyone have ideas about what they want to have added?

What is all needed for reprap?
Not sure if many people would put Ubuntu on their PC just for reprap
Re: NEW Printer smiling smiley = More Parts

The beauty of a USB install is that you can run it all from the USB drive without installing to the hard drive. apparently there is already a reprap ubuntu distro out, I am downloading it. I think it would be cool to have a linux distro with all the CAD, RepRap software and settings preloaded and maybe even some 3D scanning stuff.

Whats Needed?
Skeinforge or skeinfox, replicatorG or reprap software, maybe art of illusion, might load arduino software.

I just prefer Linux, I am currently running our makerbot with a MAC, and run my CNC/mill with linux. Windows has way to many issues and my son is running linux on the box he is going to use for his repstrap. and I just bought a new netbook that I am going to use for running both a Repstrap machine and my CNC/Mill and for general use in my shop.

I'm excited to see how reprap works out for you.
You are probably the first in oklahoma to get one going.

Some printed Test parts.

Whistle

Ipod Dock

Still have warping on larger parts, PLA should get here in the next couple days.

In case you have been wondering why I have not shipped any complete sets of Mendel parts yet,
My new Netbook That I had great plans for bit the dust, It has been returned to sender for refund but it has slowed me down, I was also sick for a couple of weeks, Hmmmm.... Bought some Arduinos and LED Matrix es and got a little sidetracked and been working everyday after school with the after school program which makes days 10.5 hours long, Not making excuses just explaining. I have been printing a few every day so one day soon I will have a complete set to send out.
