Dear all friends and players, we would like to collect your opinions on whether it’s good to replace DRV8825 with A4982 on MKS Sbase.
Following is comparison on these 2 drivers.

A4982(Max microstep is 1/16 )
Advantage: 1. Quite lower noise than DRV8825, even at 24V.
2. Excellent printing stability.
Disadvantage: 1.Maximum current is 2A.
2. Its withstand voltage is less than DRV8825’s.

DRV8825(Max microstep is 1/32)
Advantage: Maximum current is 2.5A, so it has excellent cooling and withstand voltage.
Disadvantage:1. A little big noise, especially at 24V;
2. Appear print moire, the overall printing effect isn’t so good as 4982.

Then, which stepper driver do you prefer? Your idea is greatly appreciated to us.
Sincerely

Its depend of your printer, I know for a fact that 8825 are horrible in delta specially at 24V, they left circle all over the surface, its because they are not good at low current or slow movement ( happen a lot in a delta one tower move very slowly and only a few while the 2 other move faster).

There way to fix them ( help but not completely eliminate the artefact in delta at least) you have to use them in Fast Decay or some people went with some diode to help that. But in fast decay they are loud.

I have like 8 8825 here and Im planing to build a cartesian printer soon and even there I will not use them, my go to driver is raps128 now, they work wonder, can go 1/128 if your using 32 bit and there are the only one with good cooling since they are mod to cool at the top, unlike all other drivers that cool by the bottom, so 8825 excellent cooling.. I say no, there are the same as 4988 bottom cooling.

You can fix the Moire problems with the DRV8825s. See: [cabristor.blogspot.se] It may still whine...

The driver chip's max current spec is meaningless in the context of those driver modules. Your printer's motors use some specific current. All you need to worry about is can the new drivers deliver that much current. Even though the chips are specced at 2A, they can't deliver that when they're soldered to those little driver modules because the chips will overheat.

I have been having similar thoughts so I am going to try both solutions:

- the diode fix
- A4988 drivers

...and report back once it's done.

Dear Sir,
correct point.
Thanks you so much ,It is much help for us.
We will keep improving that.

Yes,DRV8825 will make Moire problems, both them have its advantages. But we are going to use A4982.Thanks you so much for you guys advises.

The DRV8825 are junk!

I when I started on the stepper motor controller I was using step sticks and testing with the A4988, and then tested with the DRV8825 and found it had large errors on 16x microstepping. I contacted TI and asked them if I was doing something wrong and they recommended buying their new chip as it was suppose to be better...

Here is some graphs and details of the error.

Here is an example of the DRV8825 error during 16x microstepping
