Printer just stops
December 06, 2014 05:23AM
Hi.
I successfully printed 2 things yesterday. Among them, a 7h ABS print, no issues. Later in the evening, I started a 3h job.. at 70%, the printer simply stopped. No strange sounds, USB connection was dropped (I was printing from SD card), motors and heaters off. I was able to connect to the board right away again and control the printer via USB. It happened again on another file shortly after, then I powered down the printer completely. I was able to print something then. This morning, same thing.. printed skirt, part of the first layer, shutdown. No errors.
It's an original mendel90 kit from nophead with Melzi and his Marlin firmware version.
Can anyone help?
Edit: Just checked voltages. 12V drops down to 11.32v while heating. Is this within normal range?

This is the pronterface log, just monitoring with it as I have always done.

Have you got the auto reset jumper fitted? If so remove it so USB disconnects don't reset the Melzi.

Yes 11.32V is probably in the normal range but check that the ground and power terminals on the Melzi are very tight. A low 12V won't stop the print, but a bad ground connection will cause a USB disconnect.

Nope, the jumper isn't set.
The terminals were actually a little loose.. is it possible that they come loose from heating/cooling/vibration? All of them took a good 1-2 turns to tighten fully again, bed, heater, etc.
Voltage seems to have risen to 11.6v now, so it may have been a contact issue indeed.
Any means to keep the screws from wiggling loose? I don't want to overtighten them to the point of tearing through the plastic.

Edit: Seems that was indeed the issue, 5h print went through fine.

Perhaps too much solder on the wires so it compressed or not tight enough to start with. I haven't had one work loose in years of machine time. I hold the plastic bit with one hand while tightening them, so as not to stress the PCB connection.
