Printing noise and Vibration
December 05, 2014 01:14AM
Hello Reprap Community,

I dont own a reprap yet, but after watching a number of videos where a prusa i3 was printing, I have heared the squeaking noise. Is this because of belt tension or a T2 vs T2.5 vs T3 pulley and belt holder thing?

Thanks,
Beeep22

It's linear bearings and stepper motors though most comes from the bearings.

You could use bronze bushings to make it more silent, or IGUS sliding bearings, but those are expensive.

A squeaking noise? Or more like musical tones? The latter can be heard in this video for instance and is inherent to how steppers operate. You'll always have that sound and personally, I like it. Printing curves is relaxing to my ears. But if it's an actual squeak then it could be a variety of other things. Can you point us to the video(s) in question?

That sounds like the normal stepper motor noise to me.

I would agree. It's a lousy recording audiowise and kinda tinny both with the printer sounds and narriations, but from what I could hear it all sounded normal. In person it won't be as shrill sounding as moments were.

Yes. It is the the motors making the noise.
But with dampeners and fine tuning of stepper drivers you could eliminate most if not all this noise...

With fine tuning my x- axis and y-axis are silent.
But my double z-axis motor male a light buzz.
And my extruder makes the same.

And yes.
The camera is picking up and amplifying the noise.

I know that Gadgets3D has stepper drivers with a trimpot, you can make your machine run very silent with these stepper drivers and they aren't even that expensive.
