MM2 -- laser cut parts - Price reasonable?
September 18, 2013 02:04PM
Received the first quotation from a local firm for the 23 laser cut parts. (waiting for 2 others)

£64.50 inclusive of tax and collect from their workshop.

Front and back plates, top and bottom triangle, Y and Z motor mounts, X vertex and X Carriage, Z base plate, X end idler, X end motor, X idler tensioner, Z lead screw arms, RAMPS and PSU mounts and finally the Y plate. In total 23 parts in their respective thicknesses aluminium plate.

I have absolutely no idea if this is a good or bad price or if there another way to get them?

What do you think?

A second company has replied to my quotation request this morning and has asked me to include at least one dimension on each .dxf file.

(The first company accepted that the .dxf files were 1:1 scale and quoted me on that basis.)

Are there dimensions available anywhere please.

Or am I missing the obvious?

The request for one dimension is probably to make sure the DXFs are scaled right. There are so many mm <=> inch <=> cm <=> meter conversions out there, so it's better to check.

Thanks that sounds like they are on the job.

(actually this particular company was recommended by another one who only cut steel.)

So what I'm looking for now are some dimensions.

Ideas anyone please?

Look, it's pretty straightforward, your supplier asks that you add at least one dimension into each DXF drawing, and that's what you need to do.

It would be very straightforward if I knew the dimensions.

I've looked everywhere but I've only come up with the drawing files (the .dxf files).

In desperation I've used a mates computer and printed (on paper) using "SOLIDWORKS" the parts (using the 1:1 print option)

The faceplate I have paper printed measures 340mm wide.

Unfortunately I have no way of knowing if this is the correct size.

I have telephoned the laser cutters and asked them to quote me on this basis.

But unless I get "a" (or the) dimensions they say I will be taking a risk of the parts being cut slightly too small or too big.

BTW does the first quote of £64 seem about right?
