Libraries with lower-end 3D printers - Inventory
March 09, 2013 10:20AM
Hi everyone,

I'm currently compiling a list of all the the libraries who own or use (heavily) lower-end 3d printers (below ~$5000) around the world. Attached, you'll find a pdf with a list we've been compiling to examine the spread of its adoption into libraries.

This list was compiled by using a mix of these key terms: 3d, printing, printer, printers, library, libraries, makerbot, etc. The best results were found in Twitter and Youtube. I would then examine the Tweets or video to find out what library they are talking about, then going to that library's website to try to find a webpage or mention of the technology, and what they offer (services? makerspaces? workshops? tutorials?).

Here's the list of libraries so far:

WM Logan Library at Schreiner University - Kerrville, Texas
Fayetteville Free Library, Fayetteville, New York
Dalhousie University Libraries - Killam Memorial Library, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
Innisfil Public Library - Lakeshore Branch, Innisfil, Ontario, Canada
University of Mary Washington - The Simpson Library, Fredericksburg, Virginia
Glen Ellyn Public Library, Glen Ellyn, Illinois
Merrick Library, Merrick, New York
Robert Hoag Rawlings Pueblo Main Library, Pueblo Colorado
Detroit Public Library, Detroit, Michigan
North Carolina State University - Hunt Jr. Library, Raleigh, North Carolina
Piscataway Public Library, Piscataway, New Jersey
Westport Public Library, Westport, Connecticut
Matteson Public Library, Matteson, Illinois
Cleveland Public Library - TechCentral - Main Library, Clevland, Ohio
Sunshine Coast Libraries, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
University of West England - Frenchay Campus, Bristol, England
DeLaMare Library, University of Nevada, Reno, Nevada
Sauk City Public Library, Saul City, Wisconsin
Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne, Indiana
Trumbull Library, Trumbull, Connecticut

Unsure:
Urbana Free Library, Urbana, Illinois
Saginaw Public Library, Saginaw, Texas
Boxford Town Library, Boxford, Massachusetts
Louisville Free Public Library, Louisville, Kentucky
Boise Public Library, Boise, Idaho

Mid or Higher end 3d printing-rapid prototyping services:
University of Michgan - 3D Lab, Ann Arbor, Michigan

For each of them, I am asking these questions:

Library/Institution:
City:
State/Province/District:
Country:
Evidence of 3D printing (websource): http://
Type of library institution:
Make:
Type:
Activity:
Plastic filament (or other material):
Contact: --
Cost:
Other:

For Dalhousie University for example, I got this information:

Library/Institution: Dalhousie University Libraries - Killam Memorial Library
City: Halifax
State/Province/District: Nova Scotia
Country: Canada
Evidence of 3D printing (websource): [libraries.dal.ca]
Type of library institution: Academic
Make: Makerbot
Type: Replicator (1)
Activity: 3d printing service, workshops
Plastic filament: PLA
Contact: --
Cost: $1 per hour of print
Other: 3D scanner available (NextEngine)

Observations:
1) Haven't found a lot of European representation (only Bristol England), and no Asian, South American or African representation. Factors: I only read French and English so I can only scan for certain keywords. I suspect that there could libraries in Africa, Japan and China (academic libraries?), that have brought in 3D printing. I also think places like Germany, the Netherlands, etc., have shown considerable FabLab activitiy since the beginning, and some of these 3d printers may have made their way into libraries in those areas.
2) Some "libraries" are pushing the boundries of the definition of "library". Hackerspaces/FabLabs are creating partnerships with public libraries.
3) There's a lot of excitement regarding 3D printing in libraries, but the sample size of libraries is still small. The spread of 3D printing in libraries will most likely depend on the success or failure of the current libraries in their hopes to adopt the technology and improve patron-access methods and systems.
4) Some of these libraries that I've reached out to have great PR people.

Help, comments, or feedback is appreciated.

Thanks,

Riel,
MLIS Dalhousie 11-13

Hi
You can add City of Adelaide Library Service in South Australia to your list of libraries with 3d printers. We currently have then in our Innovation Lab, which is run with a mixture of library staff and volunteers. The Innovation Lab’s aim is to explore and foster a social environment where anyone in the community can see, share, touch and play with cool technologies and talents at the forefront of global creativity. Come together to collaborate on ideas, drive programs and projects and learn from each other. [www.adelaidecitycouncil.com]

Here's an interactive map of te known libraries around the world that have or may have 3D printers. Let me know if you see anything that needs to be added or corrected. I'll hopefully be adding additional information to the locations in the coming weeks.
