Global reprap distribution graph

Global reprap distribution graph

Global distribution of RepRap.

I have started to play around with 'FreeMind' a
open source mindmapping tool.

So I have started to make a global distribution plan for 'Darwin'
parts.

The idea is that people in the top of
the hierarchy send replicated parts the longest distance and
people lower in the hierarchy send parts a shorter distance.

Color coding of people tells how far they are with there RepRap.

Blue: Interested in the RepRap
Green: Have all non-reprap parts ready.
Red: Have received the repraped parts.
Black: Have a fully running RepRap that is producing parts.

So when people turn from red to black, they start to produce
reprap parts. At that point they move up in the hierarchy
to the highest position that is not occupied.

So when Adrian Bowyer starts producing with the first
version of Darwin, he moves up to become Earth distributer.
And he then sends Vik Olliver the new part and Vik then
moves up and become Oceania distributer.

That the basic idea. If your want to be included in the
graph, then send me an email describing where in the graph
your belong and what your status(color) is.

Send the email to: shs at demosophia dot net

America is just closed. I will add more countries
as I add people.
And I will try to keep the branching factor
around 5 (3-7).

So if your know of groups for countries like
Scandinavia and the Baltic countries, please tell me.

There are a lot of people pinging my website who live around the Baltic, but so far nobody has started building anything to my knowledge.

I have added some more people and put on a link
to there forum page. So that your can easy
find them from the mindmap file.

We still miss people from
South America, Asia and Africa to be global.

This seems like a nice idea. It's a shame it's an offline file format. To represent this, all we really need is a tree, not a more general graph. Surely there must be something we can use for this that's a bit more onliney and that multiple people can edit?

I think there are these great Google earth hacks that might support this ... don't know sufficient about it though.

It's quite easy to create a google map of collaborators, color code can stay the same:

[maps.google.com]

The bad thing is it's impossible to collaboratively edit the map :/ Unless someone make a mix of the kml files smiling smiley

Yeah, and I don't think google maps represents the tree hierarchy either. The nice thing about a hierarchy is that it can represent a fallback regional distributor where there isn't a country or city distributor.

Well I just found the a java module and put
it online here.
[shs.demosophia.net]

But it is not editable.

Can we maybe use subversion and have the file
accesible to the web.
Re: Global reprap distribution graph

subversion would work, but i think an even better place would be the wiki. we can just create a 'distribution' page, upload this file and then place some discussion on it. then people could download it, edit it, then re-upload it.

if you're interested, PM me and i'll set you up with access.

Not to be picky or anything, as I'll help out however I can, but I think Italy would be better off with Western Europe. With regards to geographical locality, and shipping integration I think that would make more sense. I know I have no problems ordering and shipping stuff back and forth to France, Germany and Austria, but not so much to Greece or any of the other countries listed in Southern Europe. Anyway, just a thought. I'm sure it won't be too much of a problem if you leave it the way it is right now as well.

Cheers,
Keith

As far as I know the wiki is closed and only
for approved users. So people would not be
able to edit it. And add there names to a
wiki page. Since it is the case it might
be faster to send me the name, but I am a
good project start and no a good maintainer
so if we at some point could move the resoncibility
from me to somebody else it would be great.

PS. I once had a login but then the wiki became
closed due to spamming(on the wiki, not by me ;-)).

vonBarky, I have used FN's regions as found
on wikipedia.
I think we should wait a little and see how many
more come on before we decide what to do.

If countries in South Europe have a bad
postal system we might fall back on the European
distributer.

yeah, it is quite a bummer we had to close registrations on the wiki. we're looking into moving that to my server. once it gets moved to my server, we're going to try and move it to media wiki or some other wiki platform that is more resistant to spamming.

as for maintaining, hopefully there wont be much work. once we get the list established, it should be pretty much cut and dried. also, the forums would be a good place for people to go if the list wasnt working out very well.

I just ran across this new Web 2.0 app that might fit the bill called Mindmeister - an online collaborative mindmapping software. [www.mindmeister.com] You could always just add a link to the mindmap in the wiki.

I haven't used it (I normally use Mindjet MindManager for mindmaps) but it looked neat and it's on my long list of things to try once I get some extra seconds. Might be worth a look.

Cheers,
Keith

ooh, that looks like a cool find. definitely something we should look into. isomorph: would you be so kind as to investigate that and let us know how it goes? if it works well, this could take alot of pressure off you on maintaning the list.

Hi All,

I've been following the project for a while and I'm definately interested in building one. I'm starting to look at setting up the electronics first. So put me down as a Blue link in California smiling smiley

That is pretty cool...

yes Mindmeister looks good but it is only FREE
for the first month.

But we can load the map from freemap into it.

I believe that the basic version is always free, but you do get access to all the premium features for one month. After that, the account reverts to a normal basic account. I am not sure and haven't actually used the service, but it looks like we would only need the features of the basic (free) service.

Keith
