Extruder stepper not functioning during printing?

Okay, so I finally got my contraption to stop making pieces of modern art and to start on making something more square, except that the extruder stepper doesn't seem to want to move during printing, but will happily extrude cm after cm when manually told to do so. It's receiving power to stay in place, so is there something wrong with the firmware? I haven't really changed much, so I'm not sure.

If slicing with skeinforge make sure the dimension tab is turned on

You are not the first to have this issue...it happens a lot in IRC. It happened more often before Slic3r came out though.
